Was the Universe Reionized by Massive Population-iii Stars?

چکیده

The WMAP satellite has measured a large optical depth to electron scattering after cosmological recombination of τes = 0.17 ± 0.04, implying significant reionization of the primordial gas only ∼ 200 million years after the big bang. However, the most recent overlap of intergalactic HII regions must have occurred at z . 9 based on the Lyα forest constraint on the thermal history of the intergalactic medium. Here we argue that a first generation of metal–free stars with a heavy (rather than Salpeter) mass function is therefore required to account for much of the inferred optical depth. This conclusion holds if feedback regulates star formation in early dwarf galaxies as observed in present-day dwarfs. Transition From Population III to Population II Stars

The transition from Population III to Population II stars is determined by the presence of a sufficient amount of metals, in particular, oxygen and carbon. The vastly different yields of these relevant metals between different initial stellar mass functions would then cause such a transition to occur at different times. We show that the transition from Pop III to Pop II stars is likely to occur...

The Era of Massive Population Iii Stars: Cosmological Implications and Self-termination

The birth and death of the first generation of stars have important implications for the thermal state and chemical properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the early universe. Sometime after recombination, the neutral, chemically pristine gas was reionized by ultraviolet photons emitted from the first stars, but also enriched with heavy elements when these stars ended their lives as ene...

Do We Need Stars to Reionize the Universe at High Redshifts? Early Reionization by Decaying Heavy Sterile Neutrinos

A remarkable result of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations is that the universe was significantly reionized at large redshifts. The standard explanation is that massive stars formed early and reionized the universe around redshift z ≈ 17. Here we explore an alternative possibility, in which the universe was reionized in two steps. An early boost of reionization is provi...

Late reionizations of the Universe and their manifestation in the CMB data

We investigate two sets of two-epoched reionization models and their manifestation in the CMB polarization of the upcoming MAP and Planck missions. In the first set of models, the universe was reionized twice, first at z ≃ 15 by population III stars and then at z ≃ 6 by stars in large galaxies. In the second set of models, the extra peak-like reionization at high redshifts z > 100 is induced by...

The Universe Was Reionized Twice

With a top-heavy initial stellar mass function for Population III stars, as recent simulations seem to suggest, we show that Pop III stars can, for the first time, reionize the universe at z ∼ 15 − 20 in the standard cold dark matter cosmological model. The physical reason rests in the positive feedback from Pop III star formation, made possible by a high X-ray background, which, in turn, is pr...
